Field Trip: Rock Creek Aquatic Invertebrates

Join us for a hands-on learning experience in the Sapphire Mountains along Rock Creek. We'll take a short walk to the creek’s riffles, where we'll use kick nets to reveal the underwater life of aquatic invertebrates. Participants will utilize the tools of the aquatic entomologist to see the critters that make this a blue ribbon trout stream. After collecting, observing, and releasing the critters back to their home water, we'll discuss what makes Rock Creek a climate refuge and how the surrounding wilderness areas foster connectivity on land and by water.

We’ll follow foot trails along the perimeter and crisscross the 72-acre parcel, stopping at a potential cultural site along the way and tracing the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail.

Hike Bear Canyon in the Pryors

Spring is the best time to be in the Pryor Mountains. On this out-and-back adventure, we’ll pause to admire the diversity of birds and wildflowers that make the Pryors an ecological hot spot in southern Montana. Our route will take us up Bear Canyon to the Big Sky Trail until we hit the “T” junction. We’ll find a scenic spot for lunch somewhere along the way before retracing our footsteps. The Pryors are part of the traditional homelands of the Apsáalooke (Crow) people, and petroglyphs, pictographs, and tipi rings are all possible sightings, so it is important to visit with respect.

Sun Canyon Hike

The Rocky Mountain Front humbles visitors with revelations of human and geologic history. Carved by the Sun River, Sun Canyon showcases the power of water and is home to many pictographs from the area's earliest inhabitants. We'll respectfully visit these pictographs as our trek progresses alongside the river's crystal clear waters. Then, we'll backtrack to Wagner Basin to see the skull tree, Castle Reef, and Sawtooth Mountain.
