Today is National Take a Hike Day — so what better way to celebrate than by launching our shiny, new-and-improved online hiking guide?

Hike Wild Montana, our online hiking guide, features more than 350 trails across the state — submitted by fellow public lands explorers. Launched in 2016, Hike Wild Montana is the state’s first statewide online hiking guide with trail information crowdsourced from hikers from around the state. In addition to allowing users to search trails, read recent trail reports, and discover local businesses nearby, Wild Montana encourages hikers to submit their favorite trails and share trip reports with the community as well.

In addition to a sleek new look, users can now find Google Maps directions to the trailhead to make navigation a breeze. The addition of useful filters – such as mileage, elevation, and trail surface – make finding an accessible trail easier than before, and filters for sought-after trail features, like waterfalls or old-growth forests, make finding your perfect hike easier as well.

Wild Montana Executive Director Ben Gabriel says that the new and improved hikewildmontana.org will help Montanans connect with public lands, from the Missouri River Breaks National Monument in central Montana to the Cabinet Mountains in the northwest.

“We’re grateful for the wealth of public lands across the state, and want to help everyone enjoy and benefit from them,” says Gabriel. “Hike Wild Montana’s new features will make it easier for Montanans to explore new trails and share their favorite hikes with the community.”

Wild Montana is committed to connecting people to the landscapes we’re working to protect through our hiking guide, our Wilderness Walks program, and our trail stewardship program. Since 2012, more than one thousand Wild Montana volunteers have maintained and improved some 400 miles of trails.

Explore the new Hike Wild Montana at hikewildmontana.org and be sure to submit new trails and trail reports as you hike, ski, snowshoe, and more on our wild public lands.

If you do plan to celebrate National Take a Hike Day today, please remember to wear hunter’s orange, read signage, make plenty of noise, and avoid hiking near dawn or dusk.
