Ski the Divide at Stemple Pass

Water Hill Snowshoe

Ascend a portion of Water Hill in the wild Cataract Roadless Area to enjoy views of the Clark Fork River’s Vermillion Bay and explore an area that serves as a wildlife corridor and provides quiet recreation opportunities. We’ll snowshoe up one mile to an overlook and continue the climb if conditions allow. The Forest Service is currently revising the Kootenai National Forest’s winter travel management plan. You can experience winter travel in the Kootenai for yourself and share your thoughts with the Forest Service as the process proceeds. Venture from the banks of the Gallatin River up to frozen Lava Lake in the Spanish Peaks unit of the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. This popular summer destination becomes a quieter, more immersive experience when blanketed in snow and ice. We’ll supply snowshoes if needed, but winter boots with microspikes are usually sufficient for this winter adventure into “The Lee,” which just celebrated the 40th anniversary of its wilderness designation.

Snowshoe to Pompey’s Pillar

Let’s venture back in time at Pompey's Pillar. This large sandstone outcrop is a geologic wonder. This area holds historic significance as it once was a major ford of the Yellowstone River. During the Corps of Discovery's expedition, William Clark engraved his name on the 120-foot pillar. The pillar was also a place of ritual and religious significance for several Native American tribes for over 11,000 years. This outing is a great chance to visit a historic site and enjoy the quiet of winter along the Yellowstone River.

Flesher Pass Snowshoe

GPS Training for Wilderness Travel

Looking Glass – Two Medicine Valley Snowshoe

The Looking Glass Road connects the Two Medicine and Cut Bank areas of Glacier National Park. While not as famous as the Going to the Sun Road, Looking Glass' views are of the same caliber. In winter, the road remains unplowed, allowing opportunistic snowshoers like us to take in the sights at two miles per hour. This road is on the Blackfeet Reservation, so a Blackfeet recreation permit is required to join.

Badger – Two Medicine Ski

Join the Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance and Wild Montana for a backcountry ski adventure in the Badger-Two Medicine. We plan to ski a loop from the Marias Pass parking area through the Pike Creek drainage, with the exact route dependent on snow conditions. The route will include some moderate grade ascents and descents, with great views of the surrounding mountains. We'll look for wildlife tracks, especially wolverine, learn a bit about winter ecology, and discuss current challenges related to the management and long-term protection of this wild and sacred place. Participants should be intermediate to advanced skiers and must provide their own gear. Light backcountry touring skis with metal edges are recommended.

King of the Little Belts Snowshoe
