Enter the Flathead-Kootenai Chapter College Scholarship Essay Contest

The $500 scholarship is available to students in Lincoln, Lake, and Sanders Counties

Announcements, Around MWA

Calling all college students! Do you love public lands and believe they’re an essential part of Montana’s heritage? Do you want to see them protected? Well, MWA’s Flathead-Kootenai Chapter is looking for our very own Edward Abbey, Aldo Leopold, or John Muir to write about what our state’s public lands mean to them, and what they’re doing to protect and preserve Montana’s wild heritage.

To encourage students to share their stories, the Flathead-Kootenai Chapter is proud to offer three $500 college scholarships to students in Lincoln, Lake and Sanders Counties. The scholarships will be awarded to students who outstandingly demonstrate their love of and commitment to public lands in an essay of 300 to 500 words. The award winner will be determined by the Flathead-Kootenai Chapter board of directors.

Here is the prompt:

Here in Montana, public lands play an important role in everyone's lives. Among the many benefits they provide is the opportunity for people to escape from the stresses of the modern world and recharge in a natural environment. Even long ago, before the days of high technology, the benefits of this escape were recognized. For instance, American writer Henry David Thoreau noted that “In wildness is the preservation of the world”. Discuss your experiences away from the busyness of modern life (including your phone!), and why you believe these experiences are important not only for you and your family, but for your community at large.

Creativity is encouraged - we want to hear what public lands mean to YOU.

All scholarship applicants also receive a FREE year-long membership to MWA!

The contest is open to residents of Lincoln, Lake, and Sanders Counties. Applications are due on or before Friday, April 13, 2018.
