About the Wild Divide Chapter

The Wild Divide Chapter supports Wild Montana’s mission by providing community outreach and education that inspire residents of Lewis and Clark, Broadwater, Jefferson, and Powell Counties to protect wild public lands and waters around Helena, including the Big Belts, Elkhorns, and the Continental Divide. The Wild Divide Chapter is also helping raise awareness of the Lincoln Prosperity Proposal, which would create Montana’s first new standalone wilderness area in Helena’s backyard.

How We Help Keep Montana Wild

Connecting and uniting our communities for public lands

We host programs and events, fill positions in local collaborative groups, advocate for responsible trail design and use, and support Wild Montana’s priorities in the chapter area, including the Lincoln Prosperity Proposal, which would create Montana’s first new standalone wilderness area in Helena’s backyard.

Protecting public access and stewarding trails

We organize Adopt-A-Trail and Adopt-A-Highway volunteer events throughout the year. Learn more and sign up to volunteer here. We also published a map of the Wild Divide region with trail information, and we work with the public land managers to ensure user-created trails do not proliferate.

West Central Montana MT

NEAREST TOWN: HELENA | DIFFICULTY: EASY
Join us for a fun and engaging outing great for the whole family. We will start at the Montana WILD Education Center, where we will cover some basics of bird identification and habitat. We will then follow a flat, half-mile transect around the lake and collect data on the birds that we observe. We will wrap up our adventure by entering our data into the citizen science website, eBird, and will contribute to a data set used by birders and scientists across the globe. Binoculars and field guides will be provided, but you are welcome to use your own.
