In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, the Montana Wilderness Association has completed a new hiking map featuring the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness and
surrounding areas.

The map is the product of a joint effort between the Montana Wilderness Association, the U.S. Forest Service, Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness and many other volunteers across Northwest Montana.  It highlights 13 hikes into the wilderness as well as opportunities for outdoor recreation closer to nearby communities including Libby, Troy, Trout Creek, and Heron.

Maps can be purchased for $5 through MWA's website.  In addition, MWA has also created a GeoPDF, which is available for download.  The GeoPDF allows smart phone users to find their way around using their mobile devices. People who wish to access the GeoPDF, must first download the free application on their phone. Then, they can visit wildmontana.org/cabinethikes to download the GeoPDFs, which are divided into the north and south halves of the Cabinets.

The map is full of content from local writers and photographers and MWA would like to thank everyone who contributed to the final product. It was truly a team effort.

Photographers include Donald M. Jones, Randy Beacham, Andrew Klaus, Steve Gnam, Jim Mellen and Sandy Compton. Our writers were Cabinet Mountain Wilderness Ranger Charlie Clough, retired Libby teacher Don Clark, Libby-based nature educator Brian Baxter, and inveterate hikers Jim Mellen and Sandy Compton.

The map was produced by Bryan Swindell of DTM Consulting and the layout, design and printing were contracted to Blue Creek Press in Heron, Montana.

Thanks also to Mary Laws, Carrie Croucher and Jon Jeresek at the U.S. Forest Service, and finally, a big thank you to Clearwater Creek Properties for funding the GeoPDF.

Hikers can also find the map across NW Montana in select locations in Lincoln, Sanders and Flathead Counties. For more information please contact Amy Robinson at arobinson@wildmontana.org.
