MWA announces summer schedule of outdoor excursions for veterans and their families

The Montana Wilderness Association will offer five backcountry outings to veterans and members of the US armed forces this year

Rocky Mountain Front Veterans Weekend

  •     Saturday and/or Sunday June 21 and 22, 2014
  •     Nearest community: Augusta
  •     6-10 miles per hike (exact details TBD)
  •     Moderately-strenuous
  •     Reservations required by 6/15/14

The Montana Wilderness Association invites any active member or veteran of the US armed forces and their families to join US Air Force veteran, Tristan Persico, for a weekend of exploration and car camping on the spectacular Rocky Mountain Front. Join us for one day or two, with the option to camp out on Saturday night. Exact location to be determined.

Gallatin Crest Veterans Backpack

  •     Saturday and Sunday July 12 and 13, 2014
  •     Nearest community: Bozeman
  •     20-25 miles
  •     Strenuous
  •     Reservations required by 7/6/14

The Montana Wilderness Association invites any active member or veteran of the US armed forces and their families to join US Air Force veteran, Tristan Persico, for a two-day, one-night backpacking trip in the alpine high country of the Gallatin Crest (this trip begins Saturday morning and ends on Sunday evening). The Gallatin Range is a haven for wildlife and one of the most important, yet unprotected, portions of the Greater Yellowstone region. Some backpacking equipment is available for free rental.

Continental Divide Trail Veterans Stewardship Week

  • Monday to Friday July 28-Aug 1, and/or Saturday Aug 2 to Sunday Aug 3

  • Moderately strenuous

Join the Montana Wilderness Association’s Continental Divide Trail Program for a week or weekend of trail clearing and repair along Miner Creek in the spectacular Beaverhead Range in the West Big Hole proposed Wilderness. You can choose to participate for the weekday or weekend portions, or the entire week. This is a great way to have fun while giving back to wild country and gaining valuable experience. All meals are included at no charge.

Great Burn Veterans Exploration

  •     Saturday August 9, 2014
  •     10 miles roundtrip
  •     Moderately strenuous
  •     Reservations required by 8/6/14

The Montana Wilderness Association invites any active member or veteran of the US armed forces and their families to join US Air Force veteran, Tristan Persico, for a day of exploration in the Great Burn proposed Wilderness. We'll hike to picture-perfect Heart and Pearl Lakes and make a loop along the view-packed ridge of the Idaho-Montana border. Carpooling is available from Missoula.

Swan Range Veterans Weekend

  •     Saturday Aug 16 and/or Sunday Aug 17
  •     6-10 miles per hike (exact details TBD)
  •     Moderately-strenuous
  •     Reservations required by 8/10/14

The Montana Wilderness Association invites any active member or veteran of the US armed forces and their families to join US Air Force veteran, Tristan Persico, for a weekend of exploration and car camping in the Swan Valley, sandwiched between the Bob Marshall and Mission Mountains Wildernesses. Sign up for hikes on one or both weekend days, and link them together by joining us for a campout. Exact hiking and camping locations to be determined.
